"Unless" significa "si no" o "excepto si"; "if" es la condicion neutra que puede ser positiva o negativa.
Conjuncion. Equivale a "if not" — introduce la condicion bajo la cual algo NO va a ocurrir. Siempre implica una negacion dentro de la condicion, pero SIN usar "not" en la misma clausula.
I will not go unless you come with me.
No ire a menos que tu vengas conmigo.
Unless it rains, we will have the party outside.
A menos que llueva, haremos la fiesta afuera.
The project will fail unless we get more funding.
El proyecto fracasara a menos que consigamos mas financiamiento.

Error frecuente
El error mas comun: "Unless you don't help me, I can't finish." Incorrecto — doble negacion. "Unless" ya implica "if not", entonces agregar "don't" crea una doble negacion que invierte el significado. Correcto: "Unless you help me, I can't finish." (= "If you don't help me, I can't finish.") Regla: after "unless", use the POSITIVE form of the verb.
Truco para recordarlo
Unless = if + not. Por eso, after "unless" NO repitas el "not": "Unless you help" = "If you don't help." Para recordarlo: reemplaza "unless" con "if...not" y el resultado debe tener sentido sin cambiar el significado. "Unless it rains" = "If it does not rain" → correcto. "Unless it doesn't rain" = "If it does not not rain" → sin sentido (doble negacion).

¿Sabías que...?
"Unless" es practicamente sinonimo de "except if" en ingles formal: "We will proceed unless instructed otherwise" = "We will proceed except if instructed otherwise." Y a veces se intercambia con "as long as" (siempre que, mientras que): "You can borrow my car as long as you fill the tank" = tiene un matiz levemente diferente (condicion continua) pero expresa una idea similar. En ingles coloquial, "unless" es muchisimo mas comun que "except if".
