Within, inside

Intra- comes from Latin "intra" (within, inside) and signals that something occurs or exists within the boundaries of something: intravenous = going inside a vein (administering medication directly into the bloodstream); intranet = a computing network operating only within an organisation; intramural = occurring within the walls (of a university or institution); intracellular = found or occurring within a cell.

Intra- vs inter-

Intra- and inter- are easily confused: intra- = within (a single group or entity); inter- = between (multiple groups or entities). "Intramural" = sports within the same university (between teams from the same institution). "Intercollegiate" = between different universities. "Intravenous" = within the vein. "Intercontinental" = between continents. The distinction "within one" vs "between many" is the key.

How it is used

Attaches to technical, medical, and administrative nouns. Identical in Spanish and English:

  • intra- + organ/cell (medical)
    venous → intravenouscellular → intracellularmuscular → intramuscularnasal → intranasal
  • intra- + institution/space
    mural → intramuralnet → intranetpersonal → intrapersonaldepartmental → intradepartmental

Pronunciation: /ˈɪntrə/. Identical in Spanish and English. Do not confuse with inter- (= between). Key distinction: intra- = within a single group; inter- = between multiple groups.

Common mistakes

intranet and internet are the same
internet = a global public network accessible from anywhere; intranet = a private network operating only within a specific organisation

"Internet" (inter- = between): the global network connecting all networks worldwide, publicly accessible. "Intranet" (intra- = within): a private network using internet technology but accessible only within a specific organisation (a company, a university). An intranet may look like the internet but is closed to outsiders.

intrapersonal = between people / interpersonal
intrapersonal = within a single person (internal mental processes); interpersonal = between different people (external relationships)

"Intrapersonal" (intra- = within): occurring inside one person's mind — intrapersonal conflict, intrapersonal intelligence, self-awareness. "Interpersonal" (inter- = between): occurring between people — interpersonal skills, interpersonal relationships. Intra- = inside one person; inter- = between multiple people.

A trick to remember it

Intra- = "within" or "inside": intravenous = within the vein, intranet = network within an organisation, intramural = within the same institution, intracellular = within the cell. Identical in Spanish. Key contrast with inter-: "intramural" (within one school) vs "interscholastic" (between different schools).
