'Currently' means 'at the present time'; 'actually' means 'in reality', not 'nowadays'.

"Actually" means "in reality" or "in fact". Use it to correct a misunderstanding or to emphasize that something is true, even if it seems surprising.

"Currently" means "at this moment" or "at the present time". It simply refers to the immediate present, with no connotation of surprise or correction.

Common mistake
- •Saying "actually I live in Madrid" when you mean you live there right now is the most common mistake: "actually" means "in reality" or "as a matter of fact", not "at this time".
- •Use "currently" or "now" for the present.

- •Can you replace it with "in reality" or "as a matter of fact"? Use "actually".
- •Can you replace it with "right now" or "at this time"? Use "currently".

Did you know?
"Actually" comes from Latin "actualis" meaning real or effective, nothing to do with present time. It is such a common false friend that even experienced English teachers make this mistake. The word never meant "at this point in time", that has always been "currently" or "at present".
