'Although' introduces a surprising concession; 'whereas' introduces a direct contrast between two opposing facts.
Side-by-side comparison
Use it to acknowledge something true that still goes against the main point. "Though" alone can also go at the end of a sentence to soften a statement: "She stayed, though".
Although she was tired, she stayed late to finish the project.
He passed the exam, though he did not study as much as he should have.
Even though it was raining, they decided to go for a walk in the park.
Use it to place two contrasting facts side by side without implying surprise. Unlike "although", there is no concession, just a neutral comparison. Very common in formal and legal texts.
Coffee wakes you up, whereas chamomile tea helps you relax.
My sister loves cooking, whereas I can barely boil water.
Whereas he talks a lot in class, she prefers to listen and take notes.
Common mistake
- •"Whereas she was tired, she stayed" is wrong as a concession.
- •"Whereas" expresses only objective contrast between two different facts; for doing something despite an obstacle, use "although".
Trick to remember it
- •Is the contrast surprising or does it defy expectation? Use "although".
- •Is it just an objective difference between A and B, without surprise? Use "whereas".

English is more differentiated: "although" for concession, "whereas" for contrast. This greater precision forces the English speaker to think explicitly about the logical relationship between two clauses, a habit that makes your writing clearer overall.

'Although' expresses contrast neutrally; 'even though' adds stronger emphasis to what is unexpected.
"Despite" is followed by a noun; "although" introduces a full clause with subject and verb.
'Despite' and 'in spite of' are synonyms meaning 'in spite of', but 'despite' is more concise.
'Even if' is used for hypotheticals or uncertain conditions; 'even though' is used for real, established facts.
