'I' is the subject pronoun (who performs the action); 'me' is the object pronoun (who receives the action).

"I" is the subject: the one who performs the action. It always goes before the verb: "I went", "I think". It is the one doing something.
My colleague and I presented the findings to the board, the reaction was more positive than we had expected.

"Me" is the object: the one receiving the action. It goes after the verb or a preposition: "He told me", "between you and me". A trick: if removing it leaves the verb without a subject, use "I".

Between you and me, I think the new policy is going to cause more problems than it solves.
She sent the contract to both the lawyer and me before the signing ceremony.
Common mistake
- •"Between you and I" is the most famous hypercorrection in English: the correct form is "between you and ME".
- •After a preposition, always use the object pronoun (me, him, her, us, them), never the subject pronoun.
Trick to remember it
Remove the other person and read alone: "Between I" sounds wrong. "Between me" sounds right. That confirms: "between you and ME". This trick works every time.

Did you know?
"It is I" vs "It is me" is one of the oldest grammar debates in English, over 300 years active. According to traditional Latin-based grammar, the verb "to be" cannot take an object, so "It is I" (subject on both sides) would be correct. However, in modern English "It is me" is the natural and accepted response even by the most educated speakers. Descriptive linguists consider "It is me" completely valid. This duality shows that hypercorrection is not just a learner error: even the most advanced native speakers make the opposite error with "between you and I" by applying too much grammatical zeal.
