Common mistake
- •Using "road" for any city thoroughfare.
- •In a city, the correct word is almost always "street." New York and Mexico City arteries are "streets" (and "avenues").
- •"Roads" connect cities or run through open country.
Trick to remember it
Buildings on both sides and you are in the city? "Street." Traveling between places or in the countryside? "Road." Streets have building numbers; roads have distances connecting map points.

Did you know?
English has a surprisingly detailed vocabulary for types of thoroughfares: AVENUE (wide road, often perpendicular to streets), BOULEVARD (wide road with a planted median), LANE (narrow road or secondary street), ALLEY (narrow passage), HIGHWAY (major road), FREEWAY (highway without tolls in the US), MOTORWAY (highway in the UK), DRIVE (residential or scenic road), COURT (short road closed at one end). Postal addresses in English use these words as part of the official name, which is why they matter in daily life: "221B Baker STREET" (Sherlock Holmes) or "1600 Pennsylvania AVENUE" (the White House).

"Actually" corrects or contrasts an assumption; "really" intensifies or confirms.
"Clean" means free of dirt; "clear" means free of obstacles, confusion, or visual impurities.
"Noise" is unwanted or formless sound; "sound" is any acoustic signal, pleasant or not.
"Above" is at a higher level without contact; "over" implies covering, movement, or crossing.
