'Rye' is the cereal grain used in bread and whisky; 'wry' describes dry, ironic humour or a face twisted in displeasure.

Trick to remember it
- •"Rye" is the grain, three letters, solid and straight like the plant stalk.
- •"Wry" has W like "wince" and "wring", twisting, uncomfortable, sardonic reactions.

Rye can grow where wheat cannot: acidic soils, cold climates, poor terrain. That is why it was the grain of the harshest regions of northern and eastern Europe: Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, and Poland all have centuries-old rye bread traditions. WRY, for its part, comes from Old English "wrigian" (to turn, to twist), the same root as "writhe" (to twist in pain) and "awry" (twisted, gone wrong). A wry face is literally a face twisted to one side; wry humor is a kind of verbal twist.
