Did you know?
WOULD, COULD, and SHOULD share more than their silent L: all three are past forms of Old English modal verbs that are never used as "past" in modern English. WOULD is the past of WILL, COULD is the past of CAN, and SHOULD is the past of SHALL. But in modern English we use them for conditionals, hypotheticals, and politeness, not for the past. The L of "wolde," "coude," and "sholde" (the Medieval English forms) stopped being pronounced centuries ago, but the spelling was preserved by orthographic tradition, turning these silent letters into "fossils" of an older pronunciation.
