In (lugar)vsOn / At (lugar)

Las preposiciones de lugar "in", "on", "at" indican relaciones espaciales distintas: IN = dentro de un espacio, ON = sobre una superficie, AT = en un punto especifico.

Comparación directa

In (lugar)

Se usa con: espacios cerrados o delimitados (in a room, in a building, in a box), ciudades (in London), paises (in Spain), areas geograficas (in the north, in the mountains), medios de transporte cerrados (in a car, in a taxi, in a helicopter — dentro, te rodea). "She is in the meeting room" = esta dentro de la sala de reuniones.

  • The headquarters are in Berlin, but most of the engineering team is based in smaller offices across Europe.

  • There is a mistake in the third paragraph of the report — the figures do not match the data in the appendix.

On / At (lugar)

Se usa con: superficies horizontales (on the table, on the floor, on the desk), superficies verticales (on the wall, on the screen), pisos de un edificio (on the third floor), medios de transporte abiertos o de trayecto (on the bus, on the train, on the plane — estas a bordo, no "dentro" en el sentido fisico estrecho). AT = EN UN PUNTO ESPECIFICO o ubicacion precisa. Se usa con: puntos de referencia especificos (at the bus stop, at the corner, at the entrance), edificios en su funcion (at school, at the office, at the hospital — estas ahi para su proposito), direcciones exactas (at 15 Main Street).

  • She is at the airport right now, waiting for her connection to Singapore — her flight boards in forty minutes.

  • Meet me at the entrance of the building at 2:45 — I will bring the visitor badges for the whole team.

Error frecuente

Los errores mas frecuentes: (1) "on the car" = INCORRECTO (a menos que estes literalmente encima del coche). Se dice "in the car" = dentro del coche. Pero "on the bus / on the train" = correcto (transporte publico de trayecto). La regla del transporte: en el ingles estandar, vehiculos personales pequenos = IN (in the car, in the taxi). Transporte publico o de trayecto = ON (on the bus, on the train, on the plane). (2) "in the wall" vs "on the wall": "in the wall" = dentro de la pared (un hueco, un cable). "on the wall" = sobre la superficie de la pared (un cuadro). (3) "in the corner" (of a room, espacio tridimensional) vs "at the corner" (of a street, punto de referencia).

Truco para recordarlo

El TRUCO DE LOS TRES TIPOS DE ESPACIO: (1) IN = el espacio TE RODEA en tres dimensiones. Puedes estar DENTRO de el. Ciudades, paises, habitaciones, vehiculos cerrados. Ejercicio rapido: "I work ___ an office in Madrid." El edificio te rodea = IN. "The notes are ___ the whiteboard." La pizarra es una superficie = ON. "Let's meet ___ the coffee shop on the corner."

She heard the news _____ the radio while she was _____ the car on her way to work this morning.

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

The security team will meet you _____ the main entrance and escort you to the conference room on the fourth floor.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

Complete: "The financial data is _____ the spreadsheet I shared with you yesterday — check the third tab for the Q2 breakdown."

Pista: A spreadsheet is a digital document with interior content. Is the data inside it, on top of it, or at a specific point of it?
