In (tiempo)

IN = periodos amplios de tiempo. Se usa con: MESES ("in January"), ESTACIONES ("in winter"), ANOS ("in 2023"), DECADAS ("in the 1990s"), SIGLOS ("in the 20th century"), PARTES DEL DIA ("in the morning", "in the afternoon", "in the evening"). Excepcion: "at night" (no "in the night"). Tambien con periodos de duracion: "I will be back in five minutes" = en cinco minutos (dentro de ese tiempo).

AT = momentos especificos y precisos. Se usa con: HORAS EXACTAS ("at 3 p.m.", "at noon", "at midnight"), MOMENTOS PUNTUALES ("at sunrise", "at the moment"), FESTIVOS ESPECIFICOS EN INGLES BRITANICO ("at Christmas", "at Easter"), frases fijas ("at the end", "at the beginning", "at the same time").

Error frecuente

Los errores mas comunes: (1) "at Monday" o "in Monday" = INCORRECTOS. Los dias de la semana son ON: "on Monday." (2) "on 3 p.m." o "in 3 p.m." = INCORRECTOS. Las horas son AT: "at 3 p.m." (3) "in January 5th" = INCORRECTO. Las fechas especificas son ON: "on January 5th." Regla general del embudo: IN es lo mas amplio (ano, mes, estacion). ON es intermedio (dia). AT es lo mas especifico (hora exacta, momento preciso). Mas espacio de tiempo = IN. Momento preciso = AT.

AT = el nivel mas especifico: hora exacta y momentos puntuales. "in 2023" -> "in January" -> "on January 15th" -> "at 3 p.m." Ademas: partes del dia = IN (in the morning, in the afternoon) EXCEPTO "at night" = excepcion unica que hay que memorizar.

Regla rápida

IN: anos, meses, estaciones, partes del dia (in the morning). ON: dias de la semana, fechas (on Monday, on March 5th). AT: horas exactas y momentos especificos (at 3 p.m., at noon, at night).

¿Sabías que...?

La distincion in/on/at para el tiempo tiene un paralelo casi exacto con las preposiciones de LUGAR en ingles: IN se usa para espacios que te rodean (in a room, in a city, in a country), ON para superficies (on the table, on the wall, on the street), y AT para puntos especificos (at the door, at the station, at the corner). Es una de las pocas areas de la gramatica inglesa donde el tiempo y el lugar siguen exactamente la misma logica de preposicion, lo que facilita aprender ambas categorias juntas. Sin embargo, hay excepciones notables: "on the bus/train" (no "in") pero "in the car" (no "on").

Practica lo que aprendiste
