adverbio negativo: Hardly/Scarcely/Barely + had + sujeto + participio + when/than

ESTRUCTURA: Hardly/Scarcely/Barely + HAD + sujeto + participio pasado + WHEN + clausula (past simple). "Hardly had the meeting started WHEN the fire alarm went off" = apenas habia empezado la reunion cuando son la alarma de incendios. CUANDO USAR WHEN vs THAN: HARDLY/SCARCELY/BARELY usan principalmente WHEN (a veces THAN en el ingles formal britanico). NO SOONER usa THAN (no WHEN). IMPORTANTE: estas son construcciones FORMALES y LITERARIAS. En el ingles coloquial: "The meeting had barely started when the alarm went off" (sin inversion).

  • Hardly had the company released its earnings report when analysts began revising their price targets for the stock across the major investment banks.

  • Scarcely had the new product launch been announced when competitors began publicly questioning the technical claims made in the promotional materials.

adverbio negativo: No sooner + had + sujeto + participio + than

NO SOONER + INVERSION: misma idea que HARDLY/SCARCELY/BARELY pero usa THAN (no WHEN). ESTRUCTURA: No sooner + HAD + sujeto + participio pasado + THAN + clausula (past simple). "No sooner had the CEO announced the restructuring THAN speculation began about which departments would be affected" = no bien el CEO habia anunciado la reestructuracion cuando empez la especulacion. COMPARACION: HARDLY/SCARCELY/BARELY + WHEN (a veces THAN). NO SOONER + THAN (siempre THAN, nunca WHEN).

  • No sooner had the merger been formally announced than both companies' legal teams began the extensive due diligence process required by the regulatory authorities.

Error frecuente

LOS ERRORES MAS COMUNES: (1) Olvidar la INVERSION cuando el adverbio negativo va al inicio: "Hardly the meeting had started when..." = INCORRECTO. Correcto: "Hardly HAD THE MEETING STARTED when..." (inversion: HAD antes del sujeto). (2) "No sooner ... when" = INCORRECTO. NO SOONER siempre usa THAN: "No sooner had he left THAN the problems began." (3) "Hardly had the meeting started THAN..." = tecnicamente incorrecto (HARDLY usa WHEN, no THAN). Correcto: "Hardly had the meeting started WHEN..." (4) Mezclar tiempos: "Hardly had she arrived when the boss comes in" = INCORRECTO. La segunda clausula va en PAST SIMPLE: "Hardly had she arrived when the boss came in."

Truco para recordarlo

LA TABLA DE CORRESPONDENCIAS: HARDLY/SCARCELY/BARELY + inversion + WHEN (= apenas ... cuando). NO SOONER + inversion + THAN (= no bien ... que / apenas ... que). Truco: "NO SOONER ... THAN" -> "sooner" implica comparacion = THAN. "HARDLY ... WHEN" -> "when" = momento en el tiempo. He had started" -> pregunta: "Had he started?" -> inversion negativa: "Hardly had he started."

Regla rápida

Hardly/Scarcely/Barely + HAD + sujeto + participio + WHEN. No sooner + HAD + sujeto + participio + THAN. INVERSION obligatoria al inicio. Nunca: "No sooner...when" ni "Hardly...than" (aunque "barely than" existe en ingles britanico formal).

_____ the new leadership team settled into their roles _____ a major operational crisis required their immediate and undivided attention.

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

Hardly _____ the contract terms been finalized _____ the implementation team began mobilizing resources for the transition phase.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

Rewrite without inversion: "No sooner had the pilot program results been shared than stakeholders began pressuring the board to approve a full rollout." Start with: "The pilot program results..."

Pista: When "No sooner" moves from the start of the sentence to INSIDE the clause (after the subject), the inversion disappears — the sentence returns to normal word order. Rewrite: "The pilot program results HAD NO SOONER been shared THAN stakeholders began..."
