Common mistake
In most everyday use, "country" and "nation" are interchangeable. The difference emerges in specific contexts: "the Navajo Nation" (a native people without their own state), "the United Nations" (not "the United Countries"). "Nation" emphasizes the collective identity of the people; "country" emphasizes the territory. Using one for the other in general conversation is rarely a serious error.
