Common mistake
- •"Depend on" and "rely on" are nearly interchangeable, but "rely on" always carries a positive connotation of active trust.
- •"She depends on others" can imply excessive dependence; "She relies on others" implies she trusts them with good reason.
Trick to remember it
- •To praise someone's reliability: "You can rely on her".
- •To describe a condition without judgment: "It depends on the weather".
- •"Rely" = I actively trust.
- •"Depend" = I am conditional or in need.

- •"Rely on" = to firmly trust someone or something reliable (positive).
Did you know?
"Reliable" comes from "rely" + "-able". "Dependable" comes from "depend" + "-able". Interestingly, as adjectives both form nearly synonymous words used interchangeably: "a reliable car" = "a dependable car". But the verbs diverge more in usage. Reliability as a quality unites them; verbal usage distinguishes them.
