Common mistake
- •"I play yoga" or "I play karate" are wrong: individual activities without a ball take "do".
- •The reverse error, "I do football", is equally wrong.
- •Team sports with a ball and games with opponents almost always take "play".
Trick to remember it
Three categories:
- 1.Team sports with a ball = "play" (football, basketball, tennis).
- 2.Martial arts and individual activities = "do" (yoga, karate, gymnastics).
- 3.Musical instruments = "play" (guitar, piano). Exceptions: "play golf", "play darts".

Did you know?
The do/play distinction is not universal. In Spanish "jugar" works for almost everything and "tocar" is for instruments. In English, "play" covers both team sports AND instruments, two areas that Spanish separates with different verbs. This overlap makes "play" one of the most versatile verbs in English.
