'Dye' is to colour with dye, or the colouring substance itself; 'die' means to cease to live, or is a mould/stamp.

"Dye" is a substance used to change the colour of fabric, hair, or other material. As a verb: to colour with dye. "She dyed her hair red" = she coloured her hair using a red dye.
She decided to dye her hair a vibrant shade of red.
The fabric was dyed a deep indigo using natural plant extracts.
Food dyes are used to give sweets and drinks their bright colours.
"Die" is to stop living or cease functioning. "The engine died" = it stopped working. In manufacturing, a die is a metal mould for cutting or shaping. "Dice" is the plural form used in board games.

The battery will die if you keep the screen at full brightness.

Common mistake
- •"I want to die my hair" when meaning to colour it is wrong: the verb for changing colour is "dye".
- •"Die" means to stop living or is the gaming piece.

- •"Dye" ends in Y like "spray" and "clay", things you apply to change a surface's appearance.
- •"Die" ends in IE like "pie" and "lie", short, common everyday words.

Did you know?
"The die is cast" comes from Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon river in 49 BC, an act of war that could not be undone. "Die" here is the singular of "dice". Once you throw the die, you cannot take back the roll. Caesar reportedly said this in Latin ("Alea iacta est"), and the phrase has survived two thousand years as the ultimate expression of committing to an irreversible decision.
