Did you know?
"The die is cast" comes from Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon river in 49 BC, an act of war that could not be undone. "Die" here is the singular of "dice". Once you throw the die, you cannot take back the roll. Caesar reportedly said this in Latin ("Alea iacta est"), and the phrase has survived two thousand years as the ultimate expression of committing to an irreversible decision.
