One highlights something above all else, the other indicates a specific purpose.

"Especially" means "in particular" or "above all". It introduces the most notable element of a group: "I love all fruit, especially mangoes".

The weather was especially cold this winter.
This book is especially useful for beginners.
"Specially" means "specifically" or "on purpose": something was done with a particular aim. "Made specially for you" = made specifically for you.
I made this cake specially for your birthday.
The room was specially designed for children.

Common mistake
- •Are you highlighting something above others? Use "especially" (above all, in particular).
- •Was something done with a specific purpose? Use "specially" (expressly for that purpose).
- •"I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate" vs "This was specially made for you".

- •"ESpecially" = highlights something above others (emphasis).
- •"SPecially" = for a SP-ecific P-urpose.
- •If something was done "for a specific reason", use "specially".

Did you know?
In modern informal English, "especially" and "specially" are increasingly used as synonyms and many native speakers do not distinguish them. The distinction remains relevant in formal and academic writing. The Oxford English Dictionary documents "specially" in the sense of "for a specific purpose" since the 14th century. "Especially" meaning "above all others" is documented since the 15th century. The difference has been subtle for centuries.
