"Explicit" = stated directly and clearly, leaving nothing implied; "implicit" = understood or implied without being directly stated.

"Explicit" means something is stated or shown directly, clearly, and without ambiguity. There is nothing to interpret; everything is laid out.

"Implicit" means something is understood or assumed without being stated directly. It is suggested between the lines, not openly expressed.
There was an implicit understanding among the team that whoever finished their work first would help the others.
The professor's implicit assumption was that all students had read the assigned chapters before class.
His silence carried an implicit criticism of the decision that everyone in the room noticed.
Common mistake
- •"Explicit" = stated directly, without ambiguity.
- •"Implicit" = understood without being stated, implied.
- •The speaker "implies"; the listener "infers".
- •"He made an implicit criticism" = he did not say it directly.
- •"He made an explicit criticism" = he said it plainly.
Trick to remember it
"EX-plicit" = brought OUT (EX = out): what is explicit has been expressed clearly. "IM-plicit" = folded IN (IM = in): it is inside the message without being said. Explicit = Expressed. Implicit = Imbedded in the message.

Did you know?
"Implicit bias" became one of the most searched terms in social psychology in the 2010s. A bias is "implicit" because the person does not consciously recognize it: it is embedded in their attitudes and reactions without having been explicitly formulated. Harvard's Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures exactly this: biases the subject would deny having if asked explicitly. The test's own name uses both adjectives perfectly.

"Disinterested" = impartial, with no personal stake; "uninterested" = bored or not interested in something.
"Above" is at a higher level without contact; "over" implies covering, movement, or crossing.
'Currently' means 'at the present time'; 'actually' means 'in reality', not 'nowadays'.
"Actually" corrects or contrasts an assumption; "really" intensifies or confirms.
