Jeans take their name from Genoa (Gênes in French), the Italian port that distributed heavy cotton fabric to sailors and workers. In 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented copper rivets on denim trousers to prevent pockets from tearing under miners' tools. Those rivets are why modern jeans still have metal studs at pocket corners. "Gene" comes from Greek "genos" (birth, race, kind), the same root as "genesis", "genius", and "gender."
