"Guerrilla" is a Spanish word meaning "little war" (diminutive of guerra). It entered English during the Napoleonic Wars (1808-1814) when Spanish fighters resisted French occupation with unconventional tactics. In 1984, Jay Conrad Levinson popularized "guerrilla marketing" for low-budget, high-impact campaigns. "Gorilla" has an equally fascinating history: Carthaginian explorer Hanno the Navigator (5th century BC) described "hairy wild people" on the African coast that local interpreters called "gorillai." That ancient name became the modern scientific name: Gorilla gorilla.
