"Guerrilla" comes from a word meaning "little war" and entered English during the Peninsular War (1808-1814), when local fighters resisted the French occupation with irregular tactics. In 1984, Jay Conrad Levinson popularized "guerrilla marketing" for low-budget, high-impact campaigns. "Gorilla" has its own old story: the explorer Hanno the Navigator, in the 5th century BC, described a tribe of hairy people he called "gorillai", and the name was later given to the great ape.
