'Herd' is a group of animals, or to drive animals together; 'heard' is the past tense of 'hear'.

"Heard" is the past tense and past participle of "hear": you perceived sound or received information. "I heard the news" = I received that information. Pronounced the same as "herd".

"Herd mentality" describes the human tendency to follow the group without individual thinking, and the word EAR inside "heard" (listened) contrasts perfectly with the herd (group) that does not listen, just follows. Elephant herds are matriarchal: the oldest female leads the group and remembers water sources and migration routes from decades past. Her accumulated knowledge keeps the herd alive during drought. If she dies, the herd loses its collective memory and faces a much greater risk of not surviving, an argument for the value of experience over instinct.
