Did you know?
'Hi' as a greeting appeared in American English in the late 1800s — possibly from 'hey', 'hiya' (how are you), or simply as a natural vowel sound for getting attention. 'High' comes from Old English 'heah', the same root as German 'hoch' and Dutch 'hoog'. The silent GH in 'high' originally represented a fricative sound /x/ (like Spanish J or Scottish 'loch') that English speakers stopped pronouncing in the 15th century but kept in spelling — giving us dozens of words with silent GH: night, light, right, tight, bright.
