Quick rule
Did you know?
"American Idol" deliberately played on the cultural resonance of "idol" as the most worshipped musical star in America. The root of "idol" is Greek "eidolon" (image, phantom, vision), the same root as "ideal" and "idealism." Originally an idol was a physical image used in religious worship; its modern meaning (admired celebrity) is a metaphorical extension. "Idle" comes from Old English "idel" (empty, worthless), a completely different etymology from a completely different language family. "Idle hands are the devil's workshop" is a proverb warning against inactivity as a cause of trouble, combining the word with a moral lesson that has existed since at least the 12th century.
