When negative expressions like 'never' or 'not only' open a formal clause, the auxiliary verb inverts before the subject.

Emphatic inversion places a negative or restrictive element at the start ("Never have I seen...") and then reverses the order of the auxiliary verb and the subject.

It is used to give a dramatic or literary weight to the sentence. In everyday informal speech it is rare; in formal writing and literature, it is very effective.

Common mistake
"Never I have seen such results" is the classic slip. A second one is forgetting the auxiliary when there is none: "Rarely she goes" is wrong, you need "does": "Rarely does she go". And with "No sooner", the second part takes "than", not "when".
Trick to remember it
- •The question rule: when a negative expression opens a clause, form it like a question (auxiliary + subject).
- •"Never" at the start → "Never HAVE I..." / "Rarely DOES she..." No auxiliary: add DO/DOES/DID.

- •Negative expression at start = mandatory inversion (auxiliary before subject).
- •"Never have I..." / "Rarely does she..." / "No sooner + THAN (not when)".
- •The second clause of "not only...but also" does not have inversion.

'Hardly/barely ... when' and 'no sooner ... than' express two events happening almost simultaneously; both use inversion.
'Not only... but also' adds emphasis to the second element; 'both... and' connects two elements with equal weight.
Question tags are mini-questions at the end of a sentence; a positive statement takes a negative tag and vice versa.
