Comparación directa

Emphatic inversion: Never / Rarely / Seldom / No sooner / Not only (inversion enfatica con negativos)

ESTRUCTURAS CON INVERSION: (1) NEVER: "Never have I seen such dedication" = Nunca he visto (inversion: have = aux, I = sujeto). (2) RARELY / SELDOM: "Rarely does the committee agree unanimously" = Raramente el comite esta de acuerdo por unanimidad. (3) HARDLY / SCARCELY: "Hardly had she left when the call came in" = Apenas habia salido cuando llego la llamada. (4) NO SOONER: "No sooner had the deal closed than the market collapsed" = No bien se habia cerrado el trato cuando el mercado se hundio. (5) NOT ONLY: "Not only did the project exceed the deadline, but it also went over budget" = No solo supero el plazo, sino que tambien supero el presupuesto. (6) AT NO TIME / IN NO WAY / ON NO ACCOUNT / UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES: "Under no circumstances should this information be shared externally." (7) SO/SUCH...THAT (enfatico): "So serious was the situation that emergency measures were required." (8) ONLY + expresion: "Only after the review was completed did the team realize the extent of the problem."

  • Not only did the merger significantly expand the company's geographic reach, but it also provided immediate access to a portfolio of proprietary technologies that would have taken years to develop internally.

  • Under no circumstances should the details of the settlement agreement be disclosed to the press, to any third party, or to any member of staff who does not have a direct operational need for the information.

  • Seldom has the industry witnessed a product launch of this scale succeed so convincingly across all five of its target market segments within just the first twelve weeks of commercial availability.

COMPARACION: "I have never seen such results" (orden normal, any register). "Never have I seen such results" (inversion, formal/emphatic). "She had hardly left when the call came" (orden normal). "Hardly had she left when the call came" (inversion, mas formal y enfatico).

  • The details of the settlement agreement should not be disclosed to the press under any circumstances, and all employees who are made aware of the terms are required to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • The industry has rarely witnessed a product launch of this scale succeed so convincingly across all of its target market segments in just the first twelve weeks of commercial availability.

Error frecuente

ERRORES MAS FRECUENTES: (1) PONER LA EXPRESION NEGATIVA AL INICIO PERO NO HACER LA INVERSION: "Never I have seen such results" = INCORRECTO. Cuando la expresion negativa va primero, la inversion es OBLIGATORIA: "Never HAVE I seen such results." "So great was the pizza!" = suena artificial. En conversacion: "The pizza was so great!" (3) NOT ONLY: la segunda clausula ("but also") NO lleva inversion: "Not only DID the project fail, but it also damaged the company's reputation" = correcto. NO: "Not only did the project fail, but also DID it damage..." (4) NO SOONER + THAN (no "when"): "No sooner had she spoken than the audience reacted" = correcto. NO: "No sooner had she spoken when the audience reacted" (no sooner = siempre con THAN, no WITH WHEN).

"Never" al inicio -> "Never HAVE I..." / "Never DID she..." / "Never WILL they..." (igual que en preguntas: "Have I...?" / "Did she...?" / "Will they...?"). Sin auxiliar (be, have, do, will, can, should, etc.): agrega DO/DOES/DID. "Rarely she calls" -> "Rarely DOES she call." LISTA DE EXPRESIONES QUE EXIGEN INVERSION: never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, barely, no sooner, not only, not until, at no time, in no way, on no account, under no circumstances, only after/when/if, so + adj, such + n.

Sin auxiliar: agregar DO/DOES/DID. "Never have I..." / "Rarely does she..." / "Not only did he..., but he also..." No sooner + THAN (no when). La segunda clausula de "not only...but also" NO lleva inversion.

Not only _____ the company's market share in the premium segment by twelve percentage points over the past fiscal year, but its brand recognition among target demographics has also improved significantly.

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

_____ should any member of the negotiating team share the details of our proposed terms with external parties before the binding agreement has been formally executed.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

Complete: "_____ had the newly appointed director delivered her opening remarks than several board members began raising pointed questions about the timeline and projected costs of the proposed digital transformation program."

Pista: The blank introduces an emphatic inversion construction meaning "immediately after she had spoken, the board members raised questions." Which expression (No sooner / Hardly / Never) creates the structure [blank] had... than/when... meaning "as soon as" or "immediately after"?
