'Stile' is a set of steps for climbing over a fence in the countryside; 'style' is a manner of doing something or a fashion.

"Stile" is the set of steps built into a fence or hedge that allows people to climb over it while keeping livestock in. Common in the English countryside.

"Style" is the distinctive way of doing, writing, dressing, or designing something. "Fashion style" = how someone dresses. "Writing style" = how someone writes. Also the verb to design or arrange hair.

The architect designed the building in a brutalist style using exposed concrete.
She had her hair styled for the awards ceremony.
Common mistake
- •"She has great stile" when meaning fashion sense is wrong (correct: style).
- •And "They climbed over the style" when meaning the fence steps is wrong (correct: stile).
- •"Stile" is uncommon outside British countryside contexts.
Trick to remember it
- •"Stile" has ILE like "aisle" and "file", organized passages and steps you walk through.
- •"Style" has a Y, like "your" signature manner and personal flair.

"Stiles" are an essential part of the "rights of way" in England and Wales. There is a network of over 140,000 miles of public footpaths crossing private farmland, and landowners are legally required to maintain stiles so walkers can pass. The word STYLE comes from Latin "stilus", the pointed writing instrument used to engrave on wax tablets. Your writing "style" was literally the mark left by your stylus, unique, personal, recognizable. This also gave us "stylus" (digital pen) and the modern idea of style as a personal signature.
