Did you know?
The fashion industry uses WEAR as a suffix in over forty clothing categories: activewear, footwear, outerwear, underwear, knitwear, swimwear, menswear, womenswear, nightwear, sleepwear, sportswear, casualwear. All built on the same base verb WEAR: "what is worn on the body" in that specific context. This productive suffix is an excellent example of English's ability to create compound nouns from basic verbs, a pattern that runs through the entire vocabulary.
