Comparación directa

Ago (hace... / ...atras)

"She graduated five years ago" = ella se graduo hace cinco anos (contando desde ahora hacia atras). AGO siempre va con el SIMPLE PAST (no con el present perfect): "I saw him three days AGO" (no "I have seen him three days ago"). AGO posicion: siempre despues de la expresion de tiempo: "TWO YEARS ago" (nunca "ago two years").

Before (antes / anteriormente)
adverbio/conjuncion temporal (anterioridad relativa)

Como CONJUNCION: "She called before I arrived" = llamo antes de que yo llegara. BEFORE no mide una DURACION desde ahora — expresa ANTERIORIDAD RESPECTO A UN PUNTO CONOCIDO. "Have you been here before?" "I had never done this before" = antes de este momento, nunca habia hecho esto.

Error frecuente

Los errores clasicos: (1) "I have seen him two days ago" = INCORRECTO. AGO siempre va con SIMPLE PAST (no present perfect): "I SAW him two days ago." (2) "She left two years before" vs "She left two years ago" — diferencia importante: "She left two years AGO" = se fue hace dos anos (desde ahora). "She left two years BEFORE" = se fue dos anos antes de otro evento del pasado. "When I arrived, she had left two years BEFORE" = cuando llegue, ella se habia ido dos anos antes de mi llegada. (3) "ago two years" = INCORRECTO. El orden es: [expresion de tiempo] + AGO: "two years AGO." (4) "I had been there five years ago" = incorrecto con past perfect + ago. Con AGO usa simple past: "I was there five years ago."

Siempre en simple past: "three months ago, I started working here." El punto de referencia es OTRO MOMENTO EN EL PASADO O FUTURO (no el ahora) = BEFORE. Con past perfect en narrativa: "She had finished the project two weeks before [the launch]." Truco visual: AGO apunta hacia atras DESDE EL PRESENTE. BEFORE apunta hacia atras desde CUALQUIER OTRO PUNTO. Si puedes poner "from now" despues de la frase y tiene sentido = AGO. "Three months [from now, counting back]" = AGO. Si necesitas "before [some other event]" = BEFORE.

Regla rápida

Ago = tiempo transcurrido DESDE EL PRESENTE (simple past obligatorio). "She left two hours ago." Before = anterioridad respecto a CUALQUIER PUNTO DE REFERENCIA. "She had left before I arrived." Nunca: present perfect + ago. Solo: simple past + ago.
