Have you already eaten? We were going to cook dinner.
¿Ya comiste? Ibamos a hacer la cena.
She has already finished the book. She started it yesterday.
Ella ya termino el libro. Lo empezo ayer.
I have already sent the email — no need to remind me.
Ya mande el correo. No necesitas recordarmelo.
Have you eaten yet? Dinner is almost ready.
¿Ya comiste? La cena casi esta lista.
She has not finished the book yet. She is only halfway through.
Ella todavia no termino el libro. Solo va a la mitad.
Is the report ready yet? The client is waiting.
¿Ya esta listo el informe? El cliente esta esperando.
Error frecuente
El error mas comun: usar "already" en oraciones negativas ("I have not already done it") — incorrecto. En negativo, la palabra es "yet": "I have not done it yet."
(2) Negativa = "yet" (al final): "I have not eaten yet." (3) Pregunta = "yet" (al final): "Have you eaten yet?" — o "already" si la pregunta expresa sorpresa: "Have you eaten already?!" (ya? tan rapido?)
Regla rápida
Already = ya (afirmativo, antes de lo esperado). Yet = todavia no / ya? (negativo o pregunta).
¿Sabías que...?
En algunas variedades del ingles americano (especialmente en el sur), "yet" puede aparecer en afirmativas con el significado de "todavía": "I am not done yet" es estandar en todas partes, pero "I am yet to finish" (estoy pendiente de terminar) es mas formal y literario. "Yet" como conjuncion adversativa es completamente diferente: "She was tired, yet she kept going" (sin embargo).
