"As if / as though" = "como si" — introducen una comparacion de apariencia. Cuando la situacion es IRREAL o IMAGINADA = tiempo PASADO (hipotetico): "She talks as if she WERE the CEO" (no lo es). Cuando la situacion PARECE REAL o ES POSIBLE = tiempo presente/indicativo: "It looks as if the meeting IS cancelled" (probablemente si).
"AS IF / AS THOUGH" + PASADO HIPOTETICO (MODO SUBJUNTIVO): cuando la comparacion describe algo que NO es real, que es imposible, o que el hablante sabe que es falso, se usa el PASADO HIPOTETICO en la clausula "as if/as though." PRESENTE IRREAL: "She acts as if she were the director" = actua como si fuera la directora (pero NO lo es). "He speaks as if he knew everything" = habla como si lo supiera todo (pero no lo sabe todo). NOTA SOBRE WERE: en el ingles formal, el subjuntivo de BE es WERE para todas las personas: "as if I/he/she/it WERE" (no "was"). En el ingles informal cotidiano, "was" es muy comun: "as if he was tired." PASADO IRREAL: "She talked as if she had been there" = hablab como si hubiera estado alli (pero no estuvo). AS IF + HAD + PARTICIPIO = pasado irreal (lo que se describe era irreal en el pasado). AS THOUGH: sinonimo exacto de AS IF, ligeramente mas formal. FEEL AS IF / LOOK AS IF / SEEM AS IF / ACT AS IF / SOUND AS IF: verbos comunes que introducen "as if + hipotetico."

"It looks as if the project is on track" = parece que el proyecto va bien (y probablemente SI va bien). "It seemed as if the meeting would be cancelled" = parecia que la reunion se cancelaria (y quizas si se cancelo). DISTINCION CLAVE: "She acts as if she IS the CEO" (indicativo) = quizas realmente si es la CEO o hay razon para pensar que lo es. "She acts as if she WERE the CEO" (hipotetico) = definitivamente NO es la CEO — es una comparacion irreal. EXPRESIONES FIJAS: "It is not as if..." = no es como si (+ indicativo cuando el hecho mencionado es REAL): "It is not as if he does not know the rules" = el caso es que si sabe las reglas (la frase lo da como cierto, usa indicativo). "Look as if" + indicativo = probable. "Look as if" + hipotetico = improbable/irreal.

Error frecuente
LOS ERRORES MAS FRECUENTES: (1) USAR PRESENTE EN CLAUSULA IRREAL: "She acts as if she IS the CEO" (cuando claramente no lo es) = tecnicamente posible si hay probabilidad, pero con ironia obvia = deberia ser "as if she WERE." (2) WERE vs WAS: "as if he was tired" vs "as if he were tired." (4) "IT IS NOT AS IF + SUBJUNTIVO": "It is not as if he were here" = gramaticalmente posible (hipotetico) pero raro. En "it is not as if" el indicativo es mas natural: "It is not as if he does not know" = el hecho ES real.
Truco para recordarlo
LA PREGUNTA DEL HABLANTE: ¿el hablante cree que la situacion es REAL o POSIBLE? = indicativo (presente). ¿El hablante cree que la situacion es IRREAL o IMAGINADA? = pasado hipotetico (were/knew/had). FORMULA RAPIDA: AS IF + pasado simple (knew/were) = irreal en el PRESENTE. AS IF + past perfect (had known/had been) = irreal en el PASADO. AS IF + presente (is/knows) = real o probable. WERE vs WAS: formal = were (subjuntivo). Informal = was es aceptado. Examen/escritura profesional = siempre were con as if.
Regla rápida
"As if / as though" + pasado hipotetico (were/knew) = situacion IRREAL (el hablante sabe que es falso). "As if" + indicativo (is/knows) = situacion POSIBLE o PROBABLE. "As if she WERE the CEO" = no lo es (irreal). "It looks as if she IS the CEO" = quizas si lo sea (real/probable). Formal: WERE (no was) con as if irreal.
¿Sabías que...?
La construccion "as if/as though" con subjuntivo ("as if he were the king") es uno de los pocos SUPERVIVIENTES del SUBJUNTIVO INGLES, un modo verbal que existia en el ingles antiguo y medio pero que casi ha desaparecido del ingles moderno. En el ingles contemporaneo, el subjuntivo se usa en muy pocos contextos: (1) "as if/as though" + hipotetico irreal, (2) clausulas condicionales con IF (if I were you), (3) clausulas con BE despues de ciertos verbos formales (I suggest that he BE informed = formal subjuntivo presente), (4) expresiones fijas (be that as it may, come what may, far be it from me). La forma WERE para todas las personas (I/he/she/it WERE en lugar de I WAS / he WAS) es el marcador mas visible del subjuntivo en ingles moderno. Su gradual reemplazo por WAS en el ingles coloquial es un ejemplo de como el sistema de modos verbales se simplifica historicamente en el ingles.
