Sinonimos: anticipate, suppose, believe.
I expect the meeting will finish by three o'clock.
She expected him to call, but he never did.
Do not expect me to agree with everything you say.
Sinonimos: stay, remain, hold on.
She waited for two hours at the airport before his flight landed.
Wait here. I will be right back.
Espera aqui. Vuelvo enseguida.
How long have you been waiting?
¿Cuanto tiempo llevas esperando?
Error frecuente
"I am waiting you here." Incorrecto — "wait" necesita "for": wait for someone. Correcto: "I am waiting for you here." Y "I wait the bus to arrive." Incorrecto. Correcto: "I expect the bus to arrive soon" (preveo) o "I am waiting for the bus" (estoy ahi esperando).
Truco para recordarlo
Expect = tu mente anticipa algo. Otro truco: expect va seguido de "that" o de sujeto + infinitivo: "I expect it to rain" / "I expect that it will rain". Wait va seguido de "for" + sustantivo o persona: "wait for the bus", "wait for you". Si puedes decir "permanezco aqui hasta que..." = wait. Si puedes decir "creo/preveo que..." = expect.
Regla rápida
Expect = prever, anticipar mentalmente. Wait (for) = quedarse esperando fisicamente.
"I hope she calls" (deseo que llame). "I expect she will call" (preveo que va a llamar). "I am waiting for her call" (estoy ahi esperando la llamada).
