Infinitivo (to + verb)vsGerundio (-ing)

Infinitivo (to + verb)
forma verbal (accion futura/hipotetica)

"I remembered to call her" = me acorde DE QUE TENIA QUE llamarla (accion futura en el momento de recordar: primero recorde, despues llame). "She stopped to drink some water" = paro (lo que estaba haciendo) PARA beber agua (una nueva accion prospectiva: paro con un proposito). "I tried to open the door" = intente (como objetivo) abrir la puerta (quizas no lo logre). "I regret to inform you that..."

  • She stopped to read the notification that appeared on her screen — it was an urgent message from the project lead about a critical system failure.

  • I regret to inform you that the position you applied for has been filled by an internal candidate — we appreciate your interest in our organization.

Gerundio (-ing)
forma verbal (accion pasada/habitual)

  • She regrets accepting the role without negotiating the terms more carefully — the initial enthusiasm clouded her judgment at the time.

Error frecuente

Los cuatro pares con CAMBIO DE SIGNIFICADO mas importantes: (1) REMEMBER TO DO (acordarse de hacer algo por hacer) vs REMEMBER DOING (recordar haber hecho algo ya hecho). (2) FORGET TO DO (olvidarse de hacer algo, no lo hiciste) vs FORGET DOING (olvidar haber hecho algo, ya lo hiciste). (3) STOP TO DO (parar para hacer algo nuevo) vs STOP DOING (parar de hacer algo habitual).

Test: "I remember ___ her." Agrega "because I did it" vs "because I must do it." Si tiene sentido "I must do it" = TO DO. Si tiene sentido "I already did it" = DOING. "I remember TO call her" (I must call her — accion futura). "I remember CALLING her" (I already called her — accion pasada).

Regla rápida

Recuerda: REMEMBER TO DO = acordarse de hacer (lo haces despues). REMEMBER DOING = recordar haber hecho (ya ocurrio). STOP TO DO = parar para hacer algo nuevo. STOP DOING = dejar de hacer algo. REGRET TO DO = lamentar lo que vas a decir.

Please remember _____ the signed NDA to the legal team before Tuesday — they cannot proceed with the due diligence without it.

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

She clearly regrets _____ that comment during the meeting — her expression changed completely the moment she realized how it had landed.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

Complete: "The company stopped _____ plastic packaging entirely last year after significant pressure from environmental advocacy groups."

Pista: The company had a HABIT or PRACTICE (using plastic packaging). They CEASED that practice. Which form (infinitive or gerund) follows "stop" when you cease a habit or ongoing practice?
