INSTEAD: adverbio que indica sustitucion — algo ocurre EN LUGAR DE otra cosa (ya mencionada en el contexto). Va al PRINCIPIO o al FINAL de la frase, pero siempre SIN complemento directo: "She did not attend the meeting. Instead, she sent a written summary" = no asistio a la reunion; en cambio, envio un resumen escrito. "The original plan was cancelled. The team worked from home instead" = el plan original fue cancelado. El equipo trabajo desde casa en su lugar. INSTEAD como adverbio: no puede ir seguido de un sustantivo o gerundio sin la preposicion OF. "She chose coffee instead" (en lugar de... lo que se sobreentiende del contexto). Solo como adverbio libre.
The board decided not to proceed with the acquisition. Instead, they allocated the capital toward an internal product development initiative.

INSTEAD OF: locución preposicional (preposicion compuesta) seguida de un SUSTANTIVO, PRONOMBRE o GERUNDIO. "Instead of going to the meeting, she sent a summary" = en lugar de ir a la reunion (gerundio), envio un resumen. "He chose tea instead of coffee" = eligio te en lugar de cafe (sustantivo). "She called me instead of her manager" = me llamo a mi en lugar de a su gerente (pronombre). INSTEAD OF nunca va seguido de un infinitivo con TO: "instead of to go" = INCORRECTO. Va seguido de gerundio: "instead of going." INSTEAD OF puede ir al PRINCIPIO de la frase (como preposicion) o en el MEDIO: "She chose tea instead of coffee" / "Instead of coffee, she chose tea."

(2) "She stayed instead of go" = INCORRECTO. Necesita el gerundio: "instead of going." (3) "Instead she went to the shop" (sin coma) = comun pero puede sonar incompleto sin la coma que separa el adverbio. Con coma: "Instead, she went to the shop" (correcto). (4) "Instead of she went" = INCORRECTO. Despues de INSTEAD OF solo va sustantivo/gerundio/pronombre, nunca sujeto+verbo: "instead of her going" (gerundio con sujeto) o reestructura la frase.

La distincion entre INSTEAD (adverbio) e INSTEAD OF (preposicion) refleja un patron grammatical muy comun en ingles: la diferencia entre adverbios libres y locuciones preposicionales formadas anadiendo OF.
