look forward to + GERUND (esperar con ilusion + gerundio)vsexpect / hope / want + INFINITIVE (esperar + infinitivo)

"Look forward to MEETING you" = correcto. "Look forward to MEET you" = INCORRECTO. Mismo patron: "used to," "object to," "be committed to" + gerundio.

Comparación directa

look forward to + GERUND (esperar con ilusion + gerundio)

"I look forward to meeting you in person" = espero con ilusion conocerte en persona (MEETING = gerundio). "I look forward to the conference" = espero con ilusion la conferencia (the conference = sustantivo). "I look forward to the meeting" = correcto. "I look forward to meeting" = correcto. "I look forward to meet" = INCORRECTO. EXPRESION FORMAL: "I look forward to hearing from you" es una de las clausulas de cierre mas comunes en el ingles profesional y empresarial.

expect / hope / want + INFINITIVE (esperar + infinitivo)

"I expect to receive a response by Friday" = espero recibir. "She hopes to present the findings at the next board meeting" = espera presentar. "We intend to complete the implementation by Q3" = tenemos la intencion de completar. En estos casos, TO ES PARTE DEL INFINITIVO (to receive, to present, to complete), no una preposicion. OTROS VERBOS + TO + GERUNDIO (TRAMPA FRECUENTE): Ademas de "look forward to," otros verbos y expresiones donde TO es preposicion y necesitan GERUNDIO: "object to" (oponerse a) + gerundio. "be committed to" + gerundio. "be used to / get used to" + gerundio (diferente de "used to" que indica habito pasado y va + infinitivo). "be dedicated to" + gerundio. "be opposed to" + gerundio. "contribute to" + gerundio. "resort to" + gerundio.

Error frecuente

EL ERROR MAS CLASICO: "I look forward to hear from you" = INCORRECTO (muy frecuente en el ingles profesional de hispanohablantes). "I look forward to HEARING from you" = correcto. LA CONFUSION "USED TO": USED TO + INFINITIVO = habito del pasado: "I used to work in finance" = antes trabajaba en finanzas. BE USED TO / GET USED TO + GERUNDIO = estar/acostumbrarse a: "I am used to working long hours" = estoy acostumbrado a trabajar muchas horas. "I look forward to it" = correcto = TO es preposicion = "look forward to DOING" (gerundio). "I expect it" = correcto = pero "I expect TO DO" (infinitivo, no gerundio), porque EXPECT no lleva preposicion TO.

Truco para recordarlo

PRUEBA DEL TO PREPOSICION: si puedes sustituir el [verbo + TO + X] por [verbo + TO + sustantivo] y tiene sentido, entonces TO es PREPOSICION y X necesita ser GERUNDIO. "I look forward to the meeting" = correcto = "I look forward to MEETING them" (gerundio). "I expect the results" = correcto = "I expect TO RECEIVE the results" (infinitivo, no gerundio). LISTA TO-PREPOSICION MAS COMUNES: look forward to, be committed to, object to, be used to, get used to, be opposed to, contribute to, resort to, be dedicated to = todos + gerundio. CONSEJO PRACTICO: en emails profesionales formales, nunca escribas "I look forward to hear" — es uno de los errores que mas resaltan para los lectores nativos.

Regla rápida

"Look forward to" + GERUNDIO (-ing) porque TO es preposicion (no infinitivo). Prueba: sustituye por sustantivo — "look forward to the meeting" funciona = "look forward to MEETING" (gerundio). Otros TO-preposicion + gerundio: be committed to, object to, be used to, get used to.

La ironia es que, debido a su frecuencia extrema, muchos expertos en comunicacion empresarial ahora la consideran DEMASIADO GENERICA y recomiendan alternativas mas especificas como "I look forward to discussing this with you on Thursday" o "I look forward to receiving your feedback by Friday."
