ESEN
¿Cuál usar?BásicoSTART/BEGIN + gerundio: "She started working" — enfasis en el proceso/continuidad de la accionSTART/BEGIN + infinitivo: "She started to work" — equivalente semantico, pero con matices de contexto

start / begin + -ING (empezar a hacer algo — gerundio)vsstart / begin + TO + infinitivo (empezar a hacer algo — infinitivo)

START y BEGIN aceptan AMBAS formas sin diferencia de significado en la mayoria de contextos: "She started working" = "She started to work." Sin embargo, con verbos cognitivos/estativos (understand, realize, feel, know) se prefiere TO: "I began to understand" (no "began understanding"). Y cuando START/BEGIN estan en forma CONTINUA (-ING), se prefiere el infinitivo para la accion siguiente: "She is starting to learn" (no "is starting learning").

Comparación directa

start / begin + -ING (empezar a hacer algo — gerundio)

"She started working on the project in January" = empezo a trabajar en el proyecto en enero (y continuo durante algun tiempo). "They began implementing the changes immediately" = empezaron a implementar los cambios inmediatamente. "It started raining at noon" = empezo a llover a mediodia. VERBOS ESTATIVOS/COGNITIVOS — EXCEPCION: con verbos que expresan estados mentales (understand, realize, feel, see, know), START/BEGIN + -ING resulta incomodo: "He started realizing his mistake" = suena raro. "He started to realize his mistake" = correcto y natural.

start / begin + TO + infinitivo (empezar a hacer algo — infinitivo)
START/BEGIN + infinitivo: "She started to work" — equivalente semantico, pero con matices de contexto

"She started to work on the project" = empezo a trabajar en el proyecto. CUANDO TO + INFINITIVO ES PREFERIDO U OBLIGATORIO: (1) CUANDO START/BEGIN ESTAN EN FORMA CONTINUA: "She is starting to work on it" = correcto. "She is starting working on it" = suena raro (dos gerundios en cadena). (2) CON VERBOS COGNITIVOS/ESTATIVOS: "I began to understand the implications" = correcto. "I began understanding..." = suena extraño. (3) EN EL INGLES FORMAL ESCRITO: TO + infinitivo a menudo suena ligeramente mas formal.

Error frecuente

LOS DOS CONTEXTOS DONDE SI IMPORTA LA ELECCION: (1) START/BEGIN EN FORMA CONTINUA: "She is starting working on it" = suena mal. "She is starting TO WORK on it" = correcto. Regla: -ING + -ING = evitar. (2) VERBOS COGNITIVOS/ESTATIVOS: "He started understanding" = raro. "He started TO UNDERSTAND" = correcto. Verbos clave: understand, realize, feel, see, know, think, believe. He stopped smoking" vs "He stopped to smoke."

Truco para recordarlo

LA REGLA DE LOS DOS CASOS: (1) START/BEGIN en -ING (continua) = el siguiente verbo DEBE ser TO: "is starting TO work / was beginning TO realize." (2) Verbo cognitivo despues (understand, realize, feel, know) = prefiere TO. "She started working" = "She started to work."

EXCEPCIONES: (1) START/BEGIN en continua (-ING) = el complemento usa TO, no -ING: "is starting TO work" (no "is starting working"). (2) Verbos cognitivos/estativos = TO: "started TO realize / began TO understand" (no "started realizing" aunque es posible, suena raro).

Following the regulatory update, companies across the sector began _____ their compliance frameworks to align with the new requirements, with most organizations targeting full alignment before the end of the transitional period.

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

Several weeks into the restructuring process, the workforce was starting _____ the full implications of the changes that had been announced, and morale across all departments had deteriorated significantly.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

Complete: "The junior analyst _____ questioning some of the assumptions in the model after noticing that the growth projections appeared inconsistent with the macroeconomic data that had been published the previous week."

Pista: The blank is for START or BEGIN in their past simple form. After the blank we have "questioning" (gerund). Can START/BEGIN be followed by a gerund? Is there any reason in this sentence to prefer TO + infinitive over -ING for the complement "questioning"?
