InicioCuál usarDirect questions (preguntas directas) vs Reported / Indirect questions (preguntas indirectas o reportadas)
ESEN

Direct questions (preguntas directas)vsReported / Indirect questions (preguntas indirectas o reportadas)

"Where is he?" (directa) -> "She asked where he WAS" (reportada: orden afirmativo, pasado).

Direct questions (preguntas directas)

"Where is the meeting?" (Is = aux, the meeting = sujeto: inversion). "When does the project start?" (Does = aux, the project = sujeto: inversion). "What time will the decision be announced?" (Will = aux, the decision = sujeto). "Who called the office this morning?" Si y/n questions directas: "Have you received the report?" "Can she attend the meeting?" Preguntas-WH directas: "Where did they go?" "Why was the meeting cancelled?"

  • "When will the board announce its decision regarding the proposed restructuring, and what criteria will it use to evaluate the competing options on the table?"

  • "Has the legal team completed its review of the acquisition agreement, and are there any outstanding issues that need to be resolved before the signing ceremony scheduled for next Thursday?"

  • "Why was the regional director's proposal excluded from the final shortlist, and who made the decision to remove it without consulting the wider stakeholder group?"

Reported / Indirect questions (preguntas indirectas o reportadas)

"Where IS the meeting?" -> "I wonder where the meeting IS." (3) TIEMPO VERBAL RETROCEDE UN NIVEL (si la oracion principal esta en pasado): "Where is he?" -> "She asked where HE WAS." (presente IS -> pasado WAS). YES/NO QUESTIONS EN INDIRECTA: se usa IF o WHETHER: "Did he arrive?" -> "I don't know IF / WHETHER he arrived." ESTRUCTURAS FRECUENTES: "I wonder + WH", "Could you tell me + WH", "Do you know + WH/IF", "She asked + WH/IF", "I'd like to know + WH".

  • Several committee members have indicated that they would like to know when the board expects to announce its decision and what criteria it will use to evaluate the competing proposals.

  • Could you tell me whether the legal team has completed its review of the acquisition agreement and whether there are any outstanding issues that still need to be resolved before Thursday?

  • The shareholders wanted to understand why the regional director's proposal had been excluded from the final shortlist and who had made that decision without consulting the broader stakeholder group.

Error frecuente

LOS CUATRO ERRORES MAS FRECUENTES: (1) MANTENER LA INVERSION EN LA PREGUNTA INDIRECTA: "I want to know WHERE IS the meeting" = INCORRECTO. Correcto: "I want to know WHERE THE MEETING IS" (orden afirmativo: sujeto + verbo). (2) PONER SIGNO DE INTERROGACION AL FINAL: "I wonder when will she arrive?" Correcto: "I wonder when she will arrive." (3) NO USAR IF/WHETHER PARA YES/NO QUESTIONS: "Do you know did he call?" = INCORRECTO. Correcto: "Do you know IF/WHETHER he called?" (4) NO RETROCEDER EL TIEMPO VERBAL: "She asked me where I LIVE" = posible (si es aun verdad), pero lo mas comun en la mayoria de los contextos es "She asked me where I LIVED" (backshift: presente -> pasado).

Truco para recordarlo

LA FORMULA DE LA PREGUNTA INDIRECTA: [Expresion introductoria] + [WH-word o IF/WHETHER] + [ORDEN AFIRMATIVO: sujeto + verbo] (sin inversion, sin signo de interrogacion). "I want to know" + "where" + "the meeting is." "Could you tell me" + "whether" + "he called." "Where IS the meeting?" -> Afirmacion: "The meeting IS in room 5" -> Indirecta: "I want to know where THE MEETING IS in room 5" -> simplificado: "where the meeting is." BACKSHIFT RECORD: presente -> pasado. pasado simple -> past perfect. will -> would. can -> could.

Yes/no indirecta: si/no directa = IF o WHETHER. "I want to know WHERE THE MEETING IS" (no "where IS the meeting"). "Do you know IF he called?" (no "did he call").

En el ingles indirecto/diplomatico, "I was wondering if you might be able to share where the data is currently held" suena como una peticion educada.

Could you tell me _____ the executive committee has reached a final decision on the proposed acquisition, or whether the matter will be deferred to the next scheduled board meeting?

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

The compliance officer asked the procurement team _____ all vendor contracts had been reviewed in accordance with the updated due diligence protocol introduced at the beginning of the year.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

Complete: "The project manager wants to understand _____ the new requirements will significantly affect the delivery timeline and how much additional resource will be needed to accommodate them."

Pista: The blank introduces an INDIRECT YES/NO QUESTION (will the new requirements affect the timeline? = yes or no question). Which word (that / whether / if / what) is used to introduce an indirect YES/NO question inside an affirmative sentence?
