"Save" is to preserve or accumulate; "keep" is to retain or not get rid of something.

Save
verbo"Save" implies rescuing from danger, accumulating for later, or storing a digital file. "Save money" = put money aside. "Save the file" = store the document. "Save someone's life" = rescue them.

Keep
verbo"Keep" implies retaining something in your possession or maintaining a state. "Keep the change" = retain the extra money. "Keep quiet" = stay silent. "Keep your promise" = honour it.

Common mistake
- •"Save this secret" when asking someone not to reveal it is wrong, secrets are always "kept": "keep this secret." With money: "save money" = actively accumulate it for a goal.
- •"Keep the money" = retain it passively, don't spend it.
Trick to remember it
- •"Save" = active (you accumulate, protect, or rescue): save money, save a file, save a life.
- •"Keep" = passive (you simply hold on to something): keep a secret, keep the change, keep calm.
