Miss

Extranar a alguien o algo. Tambien: no alcanzar, no llegar a tiempo, o no asistir a algo.

  • She missed the bus and had to take a taxi to the airport.

    Ella perdio el autobus y tuvo que tomar un taxi al aeropuerto.

Error frecuente

Confundir "I miss my country" con "I forget my country" — son completamente diferentes. "I miss my country" = extrano mi pais (lo quiero, no esta aqui). "I forget my country" = olvido mi pais (no lo recuerdo, lo estoy borrando de mi mente). Otro error: "I missed to attend" es incorrecto en ingles — "miss" toma sustantivo o gerundio: "I missed attending" o "I missed the meeting".

Truco para recordarlo

Miss tiene dos usos principales que hay que memorizar: 1) Extranar: "I miss you" (te extrano). 2) No alcanzar/perderse: "I missed the train", "I missed the deadline", "you missed a spot". Para olvidar (borrar de la memoria o no recordar hacer algo): siempre forget. No se confunden si recuerdas que "miss" siempre implica que la cosa existia y tu no llegaste a ella.

¿Sabías que...?

"Miss" es una de las palabras con mas acepciones distintas en ingles: ademas de extranar y perder/no alcanzar, puede ser titulo de cortesia (Miss Johnson), un fallo en disparar ("he fired but missed"), y en beisbol un "strike" cuando el bateador falla. La misma palabra para conceptos tan distintos — algo muy caracteristico del ingles.
