¿Cuál usar?Básicoadjectiveadjective

OthervsAnother

"Another" es uno más de lo mismo (singular e indefinido); "other" se usa para el resto, para plural o cuando la referencia es específica.

Comparación directa

Otheradjective

"Other" se refiere al resto de un grupo o a algo diferente. "Other people" = otras personas. "The others" = los demás. Puede ser adjetivo ("other ideas") o pronombre ("where are the others?").

  • I have two dogs. One is black and the other is white.

Tengo dos perros. Uno es negro y el otro es blanco.

  • Some students passed, but other students failed.

Algunos estudiantes pasaron, pero otros estudiantes reprobaron.

  • She lives on the other side of the city.

Ella vive al otro lado de la ciudad.

Anotheradjective

"Another" significa "uno más" o "uno diferente", siempre con sustantivo singular. "Another coffee?" = ¿un café más? Viene de "an + other" fusionados. Nunca va con sustantivos en plural.

  • Can I have another coffee, please?

¿Me puede traer otro café, por favor?

  • This shirt is too small. Do you have another one?

Esta camisa es muy pequeña. ¿Tiene otra?

  • I need another five minutes to finish this.

Necesito otros cinco minutos para terminar esto.

Error frecuente

"I want other coffee" es incorrecto: antes de un sustantivo singular indefinido usa "another coffee." El error inverso: "Do you have another options?" también es incorrecto: "another" nunca va con plural, usa "other options."

Truco para recordarlo

  • •"Another" = "an + other" = solo para singular indefinido.
  • •Para plural o con "the": "other." ¿Podrías poner "a/an" antes del sustantivo? Sí = "another." ¿Es plural o lleva "the"? = "other."

Regla rápida

  • •"Another" + sustantivo singular indefinido.
  • •"Other" + plural o con "the."

¿Sabías que...?

ANOTHER también puede ir seguido de un número: "another three days" (tres días más), "another two chances" (dos oportunidades más). Aquí ANOTHER funciona como intensificador del grupo, no como artículo individual, por lo que los puristas consideran que el "AN" de ANOTHER no aplica directamente. "Each other" y "one another" son casi sinónimos, la distinción tradicional (each other para dos personas, one another para tres o más) es rara vez respetada en el inglés moderno, y ambas formas son aceptadas en cualquier contexto.
