THE + COMPARATIVO ... THE + COMPARATIVO: estructura que expresa que cuando una cualidad/cantidad aumenta (o disminuye), otra cualidad/cantidad cambia en paralelo. FORMULA: THE + [comparativo] + [sujeto] + [verbo opcional], THE + [comparativo] + [sujeto] + [verbo]. "The more data we collect, the better our predictions become" = cuanto mas datos recopilamos, mejores se vuelven nuestras predicciones. SUSTANTIVO con "more/fewer/less": "the more clients," "the fewer errors," "the less resistance." La estructura "the more ... the more" tiene un historial gramatical interesante: el THE que aparece en ella NO es el articulo determinado ordinario, sino una forma del CASO INSTRUMENTAL del ingles antiguo. En el ingles antiguo, "the" podia ser el instrumento de expresion de proporcionalidad ("by that much more"). Con el tiempo, el ingles perdio el caso instrumental y este "the" quedó fossilizado en esta unica construccion. Lo fascinante es que gramaticalmente esta construccion paralela existe en casi todas las lenguas indoeuropeas con ligeras variaciones: en espanol "cuanto mas... mas," en aleman "je mehr... desto mehr," en frances "plus... plus." Esto sugiere que la estructura cognitiva de expresar proporcionalidad paralela es tan fundamental que todas estas lenguas desarrollaron construcciones gramaticales similares de forma convergente o heredada del protoindoeuropeo comun.
