In additionvsMoreover

'In addition' adds information at the same level; 'moreover' adds something that intensifies or extends what was said.

Side-by-side comparison

In addition
connector

"In addition" simply adds extra information to what was already said. It is neutral and direct, with no special emphasis.

  • The course covers grammar. In addition, you get speaking practice sessions every week.

  • The ticket includes the concert and dinner. In addition, you get a signed copy of the album.

  • She is a great cook. Additionally, she makes her own bread from scratch every Sunday.

Moreover
connector

"Moreover" also adds information, but with a more emphatic and formal tone. It suggests that what follows is even more important or convincing.

  • He has not done his homework. Moreover, he refused to apologize when his teacher asked.

  • The food was cold when it arrived. Furthermore, the waiter was rude when we complained.

  • The flat is small. What is more, the heating does not work properly in winter.

Common mistake

  • •"Moreover, we have a team" when simply adding neutral information is imprecise: "moreover" is used when the second point intensifies or surprises relative to the first.
  • •For same-level information: "In addition" or "Additionally".
  • •Also: "In addition to" (preposition) + noun/gerund, not a phrase with subject + verb.

Trick to remember it

  • •"In addition / Additionally" = another point at the same level (neutral).
  • •"Moreover / Furthermore" = a point that intensifies or is more important.
  • •All take a comma when at the start of a clause.

Quick rule

  • •"In addition / Additionally" = information at the same level (neutral).
  • •"Moreover / Furthermore" = information that intensifies.
  • •"In addition to" = preposition (+ noun/gerund).

Did you know?

Corpus research in academic English reveals that MOREOVER and FURTHERMORE are the most frequent additive connectors in scientific and academic papers, while IN ADDITION is more common in business and journalistic English. Second-language writing studies show that Spanish-speaking writers tend to overuse FURTHERMORE in all contexts, possibly perceiving it as a sophistication marker. This phenomenon is known as "prestige connectors": the learner overuses them because they associate them with high-quality English, which paradoxically makes the text sound artificially formal in contexts where a simpler connector would be more appropriate.
